Description: The photo specimen, about 8 mm in length, is Helicopsyche borealis, the only helicopsychid of Alberta. The snail-like spiral shell of sand grains is diagnostic, as is the strongly curved shape of the larvae. Larvae are found in streams and moderately large lakes. In the Sturgeon River of central Alberta, at the outflow of Lac Ste. Ann, Helicopsyche borealis populations had a one-year cycle. Larvae probably feed mainly on detritus. Photograph: Cheryl Podemski
