Description: Larvae of Cordulia shurtleffi are one of the few Corduliidae (or Libellulidae) species that can be readily identified to species by a single external feature. This feature is two large longitudinal stripes on the thorax; these stripes are more pronounced in fresh specimens than in the photo specimen. Cordulia shurtleffi larvae can be common in Alberta waters, especially east of the mountains in boggy muskeg areas. Photograph: Cheryl Podemski
