Description: Freshwater sponges, although usually not conspicuous, are a common component of both running and standing waters in Alberta. They have been described as nothing but little pump stations, just sitting there, continually pumping water. In the water are minute food particles, such as algae, which are utilized by the sponge. The photo specimen is one of the growth forms of Spongilla lacustris in with the freshwater clam Anodonta . Other sponge species known to occur in Alberta are Ephydatia fluviatilis (Linnaeus), Ephydatia mülleri (Lieberkuhn), and Eunapius fragilis (Leidy). Photograph: Randy Mandryk
